How Block Printing is done on fabrics?
Techniques of Block Printing goes in three different ways that are discussed below - 

Direct Printing: In this technique, the cotton or silk cloth is first bleached and then dyed to give it a base color. Thereafter, the fabrics are printed by using carved blocks, first, the outline blocks are done and then the blocks with colors are taken to fill in the design. 

Resist Printing: Under this technique, the areas that are to be protected from the dye and then covered using a mixture of clay and gum. The dyed fabrics are then washed off and then dried under the sun. The dye spreads into the protected areas through cracks, producing a curled effect on the fabric. Hand Block Printing is then used to create further designs on it and give them a final touch. 

Discharge Printing: The technique of Discharge printing is done on dyed fabric. Afterward, a chemical is used to remove the dye from the portions that are supposed to have different designs using varied colors. These portions of fabrics are then treated to be re-colored to give it a beautiful look. 

The procedure of Block Printing in Jaipur - The art of Block printing is processed in these following steps: 

• Washing firstly, the fabric to be printed is washed off with starch
• Tie-dyeing is necessary to be done before the printing process before printing. Incase, the fabric is dyed, it is washed thereafter to remove excess color and then dried in the sun. 
• Placing and securing the fabrics over the printing table with pins 
• Natural Colors are mixed and kept as ready to print. 
• Carving in the blocks of teak woods and then leave for socking in oil for 10-15 days to let the timber gets soften 
• The color tray is prepared which rests on another tray that consists of a liquid made of glue and pigment binder. This gives the color a soft base and allows even spreading of color on the block easily. 
• Before starting over with printing, the outlining of color is done to make perfect designs on the fabrics. 
• Printing using block is done by pressing the block on the fabric to make a clear impression. 
• Once the printing is completed, the fabric is dried in the sun and it is rolled in the newspaper to prevent the fabric layers from sticking to each other. 
• Afterward, the fabric is steamed, washed in water, dried in the sun, and ironing is the last stage of the block printing process.
