Having its roots in India, China, and Japan, the Block Printing is done in varied ways in each one of these places.

In India, the process involves 6 most important techniques which are much bolder than any other type of printmaking. Since these blocks are carved by hands, an intense detailing process is kept in mind while carving the block. This is also known as “relief printing” because it leaves the ink on the paper with a beautiful texture. It takes time to engrave the designs on wood and then imprinting it on the clothes. Here let’s discuss the steps involved in Block Printing Process

Step 1: To create the design
The foremost important step of this process is to create different designs typically influenced by the nature, belief, and customs of the region. Often it considers the designs inspired by plants and animals. In this the craftsmen trace motifs very carefully to carve the designs on wooden blocks.

Step 2: Wood Block carvings
This is the most important and crucial step of this process which takes a long time of several weeks in carving a block depending on the size and detailing of the image. Craftsmen use several types of knives to carve the designs on wooden blocks and give it a neat look with finishing touch.

Step 3: Choose the color
Use the best color contrast to give it an amazing impact. Choose the best natural colors or oil-based inks because these give a better coverage and print on the fabric or paper.  Use natural colors made with using pomegranate peel for green, annatto seeds for yellow, sevalkuddi for red, all colors should be home-made.

Step 4: Fabric Dying
The fabric is later dyed to give a base color and laid nicely on the table by tucking it with pins. This needs to be done very carefully, because of a single unwanted movement which can result in smudges or uneven printing on the fabric.

Step 5: Transferring the design
The color so chosen will be rolled onto the block, making sure a thin and even layer to be transferred onto the block. Afterward, the block is then pressed down on the fabric with full force by hitting the stamp by hand or with a hammer.
Day 6: Drying of Fabric
Once the dye has been dried, the complete block print fabric is rinsed off with water and then dry in the sunlight.
